ID Frankfurt

What is ID Frankfurt?

ID_Frankfurt e. V. (Independent Dance and Performance) is a non-profit association of freelance artists*, theorists* and mediators in choreography and performance working in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area. The association was founded in 2009 to improve the working situation and for self-organisation. The activities of ID_Frankfurt are developed and supported by the members in a collaborative and solidary way. A changing voluntary board accompanies and supports these processes and ensures continuous cultural-political work.

Cultural policy

ID_Frankfurt is committed to balanced and well-resourced dance and theatre funding and appropriate production and presentation conditions in Frankfurt. To this end, the association is in dialogue with colleagues in the independent scene, with the theatres as well as with the cultural office, the cultural department and cultural policy. The improvements for freelance performance, dance and choreography artists in Frankfurt that have been achieved together since 2009 – such as the restructuring of funding, the introduction of the Theatre Advisory Board and the increase in funding – were significantly shaped by ID_Frankfurt. Currently, ID_Frankfurt is committed to a renewed evaluation of the funding structure and advocates for a production house and festival format for performing arts freelancers in Frankfurt.

Artistic formats

ID_Frankfurt has developed numerous formats and facilities that are an integral part of today’s landscape of the independent scene in Frankfurt, and has fought with great commitment for their realisation. Much began with a mobile dance floor that made it possible to perform independently of the access-restricted institutions and to stage the first festivals organised by ID_Frankfurt, Tanzpanorama and Rough Cuts, in the Studierendenhaus and in the Sarai platform. Since 2013, Implantieren has been a format for site-specific performances that explicitly responds to the lack of space for contemporary dance and performance: first in the Naxoshalle (2013) and since 2016 biennially at various locations throughout the city. In addition, ID_Frankfurt and its members repeatedly organise residencies, exchange and networking formats, workshops and lecture series. In the process, all formats to date and those yet to be invented live on the ideas and further commitment of the members.

Currently ID_Frankfurt is realising the project ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main. The ID_Tanzhaus Frankfurt Rhein-Main is an initiative of ID_Frankfurt e.V., initially for a limited period of time, with the aim of creating greater visibility for dance professionals.

Z – Centre for Rehearsals and Research

The Z was founded in 2012 by ID_Frankfurt e. V. to counteract the lack of suitable available spaces for project-based work and research in the field of choreography and performance in Frankfurt. The two studios are equipped according to the specific requirements of dance, but are basically available to professional practitioners from all areas of the performing arts. They can be used for rehearsals from one day to a maximum of six weeks. The Z is not profit-oriented. The user fees merely secure the operation of the Z and give us leeway for acquisitions and repairs.

Contact and membership

ID_Frankfurt is always open to new members from the dance and performance scene in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area who are interested in solidary exchange and collaborative processes. Open meetings are offered on a regular basis. Interested parties are welcome to contact: contact. More information on membership here: become a member.
